Leverage Google to drive Leads and build Revenue

This month’s Business Success Strategies session featured Sid Lal, Managing Director of Bruce Clay Australia — part of an SEO agency founded in 1996, with Sid himself in the industry since 2000.

The conversation covered a lot of ground, but three themes stood out for service professionals trying to grow through Google and now, increasingly, through AI search tools.

Your website is the hub, not just another channel. Sid was blunt about this: all the traffic in the world — from SEO, Google Ads, social, email — is wasted if the website itself isn’t set up to convert. He shared a real example where a client was driving strong traffic but seeing no results, traced back to broken “get a quote” buttons, contact forms that forced an email client to open instead of showing a simple form, and a “Buy Now” button buried two or three scrolls below the product description. Fixing those issues lifted conversions without spending an extra dollar on traffic.

AI hasn’t replaced Google — it depends on it. One of the more reassuring points from the session: despite the surge in ChatGPT and similar tools, Google’s search market share has moved by less than 5% over the past year and a half. Sid’s explanation is that AI tools are still relatively new players without the resources to independently index and rank the entire web, so they lean heavily on Google’s (and Bing’s) existing trust signals. In practice, that means the fundamentals of good SEO — ranking on page one — now double as a pathway into AI-generated answers too.

Consistency is the quiet killer of local SEO. A recurring theme was the importance of exact consistency across your Google Business Profile, website, and any third-party directories — your business name, address, and phone number need to match character-for-character, including formatting choices as small as whether you write “02” or “+61 2.” Search engines read these as entirely different data points, even when a human wouldn’t blink.

Sid closed the session with an offer: the first three people to email him with “free audit” in the subject line get a complimentary review of their website.
